Machine Translation and MTPE

Machine translation involves artificial intelligence to automatically translate content between languages without the involvement of humans - Google Translate is perhaps the most popular (if unreliable) example.

MTPE (Machine Translation Post Editing) involves a specialist linguist refining the raw text provided by the computer-generated translation, to provide either a lightly edited version or a fully edited version of the translated text.

Machine translation is not our preferred way of working as we prefer to use fully human translation wherever possible, however there are occasions where it proves useful and we will work with specialist providers to offer this service. For example, this option is suitable for projects that have a very tight deadline and a huge amount of text, such as tender bundles.

Note that we don't recommend it for anything legally binding or extremely technical, where the skills of a professional linguist are much preferred.

This being said, there are ways to make the process produce a more reliable output, including 'training' the machine translation engine using previously translated material and glossaries to ensure key terms are properly translated, if the deadline allows.
